Play equipment can be installed on any regular lawn but a play surface is recommended for: Safety – provides a soft landing surface for fallsNo Mud – play surface drains quicklyTemperature – surface material can make more temperateEasy to maintain – no mowing or trimming required| There are many surfacing (sand, pea gravel, wood chip, shredded rubber, asphalt) and perimeter (concrete, timbers, wood) options. For most residential and personal use in Texas, we recommend redwood wood chips at a depth of 6-9” (inches) in a treated wood perimeter. The length and width of the perimeter will depend on the dimensions of the play equipment selected. | Wood Chip Play Surface |
 | We use 4x4 treated wood for the perimeter. We offset and bolt the materials together for added durability and strength. For smaller (shorter) play sets, a 2-tier would suffice i.e. 7 inches total height with up to 6 inches of surface material. For most playsets, we recommend the 3-tier option with 10½ inches total height supporting up to 9 inches of surface material. |
SafetyIn July 2001, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that each year, more than 200,000 children are taken to hospital emergency rooms due to playground-related injuries. Most injuries occur when a child falls onto the playground surface.
The CPSC recommends the following depths for surface materials. AccessibilityGang Plank-style ramps can be easily added to the perimeter for trouble-free accessibility.
